These sidewalk chalk games are simple, exciting, no-prep activities that require nothing more than a box of chalk! It’s a great way to get outside on a sunny day and bring a splash of color to your sidewalk all at the same time!

Sidewalk Chalk Games
1. Create a Road for Toy Cars
It can be hard to find sidewalk chalk games for kids of any age. In fact, even my one year old absolutely loved this activity! It’s super simple too! Just draw roads, stop signs, stop lights, parking lots, and even stores for them to visit along the way! They can play with ride on cars or you can make a smaller version for their little toy cars!
2. Sidewalk Chalk Dress Up
Have your kids lay down and trace their outline and maybe their dolls or stuffed animals too. Then let them have fun dressing up those outlines into princesses, cowboys, superheroes, etc. You can use chalk to dress them up or use real clothes!
3. Color Toy Cars
If your kids have any outdoor play cars, bikes, or tricycles, try giving them a new “paint job” with a little bit of chalk! Then grab a bucket or hose and have a “car wash” to cool off.
4. Draw Self-Portraits
The only thing cuter than a little kid’s self-portrait is getting to enjoy those self-portraits out on the sidewalk every time you walk in the door.
5. Hopscotch
Hopscotch is a true classic that is perfect if you need to entertain kids of various ages! It’s also very easy to scale up or down as you need to. You can also try adding actions to each box instead of numbers!
6. Put Out the Fire
If your kids love fire trucks and fire fighters as much as mine do, they will love this chalk activity! Simply draw a fire as big or small as you like (or a whole burning building) and then let them put out the fire with a spray bottle or hose!
7. Walk the Plank
I truly couldn’t believe just how much fun my kids had with this one! We also added lilly pads alongside our “plank” so my littles could jump to those if they started to lose their balance!
8. The Ground is Lava
Draw some rocks along your sidewalk for a super simple and fun activity! You can also add numbers or site words for your kids to practice as they jump on each one.
9. Make a Beanbag Toss Game
Draw a bullseye target on your sidewalk and grab a few beanbags (or rocks if you don’t have any!) and see who can get closest to the center!
10. Create An Obstacle Course
String together a few of your favorites from this list to create an exciting obstacle course of chalk art activities!
11. Dino Stomp
My kids loved “stomping like a stegosaurus,” while we listened to one of their favorite songs, “Ridin’ on a T-rex.”
12. Bubble Pop
If you are looking for sidewalk chalk ideas for toddlers, this one is perfect! What toddler doesn’t love bubbles?!
13. Lily Pads
Turn your sidewalk into a pond by adding a few lily pads. Then wear your kids out as they jump like a frog across all the lily pads!
14. Stomp the Bugs
Draw a few ladybugs, ants, flies, etc. on your sidewalk. Then simply let your kids get out some energy stomping around on them or turn it into a learning game. Add sight words, letters, numbers, or anything else your littles are learning about and have them stomp on the corresponding bugs as you call out the words/letters.
15. Create a Stained Glass Drawing
With a little bit of painters tape, it’s easy to create a beautiful “stained glass” chalk drawing. Since all you have to do is color each section a different color, it’s a fun activity for kids of any age to join in on!
16. Create a Bike Path
I still remember drawing roads all around my driveway as a kid and having an insane amount of fun. It’s a great way to help kids new to their bike practice turns, starting, stopping, etc.
17. Buy or Create Your Own Stencils
It’s hard to decide what to do with chalk when you have younger kids that can’t quite draw their own pictures yet. Grabbing a few fun chalk stencils is a great option to help them create beautiful sidewalk art all on their own!
18. Practice Writing Their Name
If writing their name on a piece of paper gets too boring, let them try practicing on the sidewalk instead! You can also write it out for them first and then let them trace overtop with another color or with sidewalk chalk paint!
19. Practice the Alphabet
Whether your kids are working on writing their letters or simply identifying them, chalk is a great way to practice. Incorporate letter practice into the other games on this list like the bug stomp, dino stomp, lily pad jump, or bubble pop and they won’t even realize they are learning.
20. Make a Maze
While this one does take a few minutes of prep, it’s a great way to challenge your kids’ problem solving skills.
21. Play Pictionary
If you’re looking for sidewalk chalk ideas easy for toddlers but still fun for older kids, try playing Pictionary right out on your sidewalk. I promise you’ll enjoy a few good laughs.
22. Have a Color Scavenger Hunt
Grab whatever chalk you have and create small color swatches of each color on your sidewalk. Then go on a walk, dig through their outdoor toys, and wander around the yard to find things that match those chalk colors.
Sidewalk Chalk Games For Older Kids
23. Play Checkers with Paper Plates
One of the best ways to enjoy time outside is to turn your favorite indoor games into outdoor chalk games. It’s super easy to make your own checkers game with sidewalk chalk and you can make it as big or small as you like. Make a giant version by creating a checkerboard with your chalk and then using paper plates as your checker pieces. Or use rocks you color with two different colors of chalk. You can make the board as big or small as you like depending on how much space you have.
24. Play Hangman
Hangman is the perfect game for long car rides, long waits at a restaurant, learning new words/practicing spelling, and even as a sidewalk chalk game too.
25. Create a Tic Tac Toe Board
Play tic tac toe with nothing by chalk or use things like sticks, rocks, or flowers instead of X’s and O’s to make a fun outdoor version of a classic!
26. Play the Dot Game
I grew up playing this dot game constantly as a kid and I have the fondest memories playing it with my mom. It’s super simple and will challenge older kids too.
27. Create Constellations with Rocks and Chalk
Take your kids’ love of space to a whole new level. Instead of drawing rockets and astronauts, try drawing constellations with chalk and a few rocks.
This post was all about sidewalk chalk games that will help your kids burn off some energy, learn something new, think creatively, and stay entertained for hours! All you need is a little bit of sidewalk chalk!
