What You Will Need

Homemade Cinnamon Rolls with Icing Ingredients
  • Flour– use standard all purpose flour for this recipe
  • Sugar
  • Brown Sugar– I like to use light brown sugar, but light or dark brown sugar will work just fine.
  • Milk– You will need milk for both the cinnamon rolls and the icing. I prefer to use 2% milk or higher. I do not suggest using fat free milk in this recipe.
  • Eggs
  • Butter- I usually use about two sticks of butter in these cinnamon rolls but you may want more (believe it or not).
  • Cinnamon– of course!
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Vanilla
  • Baking Sheet- A large baking sheet is an important piece of this recipe! If you do not want your cinnamon rolls to touch and be cut apart, you may need to use two baking sheets to spread them out a little more.

How to Make Them

In a skillet,  the milk, 6 Tablespoons of butter, and 1/2 cup sugar just until the butter is melted. DO NOT BOIL. Then, set the mixture aside to cool.

In a separate bowl, mix the yeast, 1T sugar, and water. Let stand until foamy (about 5 minutes).

Oil a new bowl and place the dough inside. Flip the dough over so that both sides of the dough ball are coated in oil. Cover with a towel and let it rise for 1 hour.

After an hour the dough should have just about doubled.

Before rolling out the dough, make sure to cover the surface you will roll on with plenty of flour to avoid the dough sticking. Roll the dough into a rectangle and brush liberally with 4T of melted butter.

Spread 2/3 cup brown sugar and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. You can also add nuts (pecans work best) or raisins if you would like.

Roll a rolling pin overtop of everything to set the ingredients. Then drizzle everything with 2 Tablespoons of melted butter.

Bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes. If you want your cinnamon rolls to be even softer on top, you can also brush with additional butter halfway through baking.

While the cinnamon rolls are still warm, make the icing for the top. Combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla using a whisk. This will make a thinner icing that will melt over the tops of each cinnamon roll. If you would like it to be thicker on top, add less milk to your mixture.
