How to Choose Bible Verses for Toddlers
- Short in Length– While children are highly capable of memorizing long passages of scripture, it’s best to start small and help them build confidence first.
- Understandable- Make sure the verses you choose are concepts that children can comprehend and language that isn’t too complex.
- Focus on God’s Character & Promises– Having verses about God’s character and promises memorized is a powerful tool that will serve our kids even into adulthood. Memorizing and reminding ourselves of God’s character and promises is one of the best ways to lean on the Lord in difficult seasons and circumstances.
- Helps Them Understand What Behavior is Expected– Memorizing verses about things like telling the truth, treating others with kindness, and working hard are extremely helpful to help our children understand what behavior we expect as parents and what God expects of us as Christians.
- Helpful in Moments in Discipline– Rather than, “Because I said so,” we can say to our kids, “What does the Bible say about ____?” For example, when our children choose to lie, we can simply say, “What does Proverbs 12:22 say about lying?”
- Easy References– The very first verse I taught my toddler was Genesis 1:1, partly because I knew the reference would be simple for him to remember.
How to Teach Toddler Bible Verses
- Use Visuals– Appealing to your toddlers visual memory is a hugely powerful tool for scripture memorization. That’s exactly why I created these coloring pages.
- Use Songs– While I sometimes can’t remember what I went in a room to do, I can still spout off lyrics from songs I haven’t heard in years. For whatever reason, our brains hold onto songs amazingly well. So, use this to your advantage when it comes to scripture. Plus, it makes it fun too! - Put Them Up Somewhere Central- One you choose a Bible verse to focus on, choose a spot in your home to display the Bible verse. Even though younger toddlers won’t be able to read the verse themselves, having it somewhere central will remind you to go over the verse with them throughout your day.
- Repetition, Repetition, Repetition– I recommend aiming for learning one Bible verse each month at first. This will help it really stick for both you and your kids.
