What Makes These Great Travel Toys for 2 Year Olds?
Traveling with kids, whether on a road trip or in the air, is never simple. It requires a ton of careful planning and what toys you bring may just make or break your trip.
While their are a lot more travel toy options for older kids, it can be tricky to find safe travel toys that will entertain young kids for longer than a few minutes.
These are some of our personal favorite travel toys for 2 year olds! These toys are some of our favorites because they will keep them entertained for long periods of time without being overly stimulating, they are small enough to take along anywhere, safe with no tiny pieces to go in their mouth, and they aren’t loud and obnoxious to listen to.
Travel Toys for 2 Year Olds
1. Pop Tubes
I truly could not believe how long my 2 year old was entertained by a single pop tube. But to make things even better, these pop tubes can be hooked together too! I love keeping a few of these in my car for daily trips too because they are one of the absolute best toys for car rides.
2. Light Up Drawing Pad
If your kids love water wow painting books or magnet drawing boards, this is the perfect combination of both! It’s essentially mess free painting and also has songs on it too. This is one of the absolute best road trip toys for 2 year olds!
3. Wooden Lacing Toys
We have had this exact wooden lacing apple for a few years now and it is still one of my kids’ favorite toys to take along in the car. As a bonus, it also makes a great quiet toy for church too!
4. Emotion Sensory Bottles
Not only are these fantastic toys for car trips or airplane rides, they are also a great tool to have at home. They are the perfect thing to help toddlers learn to identify how they are feeling, slow down, and regulate their emotions. Each one has different things inside to represent the emotions on the bottle with sadness dripping slowly, happiness being glittery and bright, anxiety swirling, and anger bubbling to the top. As a former teacher and a mom of three, I truly think everyone needs these in their home.
5. Mini Spinny
We’ve had our mini spinny for years now and it’s truly a great travel toy for kids of any age! It’s also been another great quiet time toy too.
6. Boogie Board
Our Boogie Board is the toy that I keep in the diaper bag at all times! It’s perfect for quiet play just about anywhere! We’ve used it waiting for appointments, for the extra long shopping trips, on long road trips, or just to play a little bit of pictionary together. It’s super compact but will provide hours of fun. It erases by simply pressing the button up top which makes it super easy for young kids to use too.
7. Leap Frog Let's Record Music Player
If your kids are constantly asking you to play certain songs in the car, you NEED to get this leapfrog music player! It has prerecorded songs that are honestly pretty catchy and it also has 10 recording slots to record your kids’ favorite songs. We switch out the recorded songs regularly with new favorites and my kids love taking it in the car to control their own music while we drive! Plus, it gives the parents a little quiet in the front to talk too! While you may want to avoid this one on a plane it is easily one of the best car travel toys for 2 year olds that I’ve found!
8. Shape Sorter w/ Strings
When it comes to travel toys for 2 year olds, I like to avoid anything with pieces that can get repeatedly dropped on the floor. The Oombee Cube gives them the fun of a shape sorter without having half a dozen things to throw or drop on the floor.
9. Pop Fidget Toy
My kids love all pop fidget toys but this dinosaur popper is by far their favorite! It’s got a little dinosaur on every single bubble and for some reason simply being in the shape of a dinosaur makes it a hot commodity in our house.
10. Poke-A-Dot Books
These Melissa and Doug Poke a Dot books are total genius. The little plastic dots to poke in throughout the book are just enough to keep a 2 year old engaged looking through books on their own.
11. 100 Words Book
I’m usually try to keep the amount of electronic toys in our house to a minimum. But, this 100 words book has saved our car rides on more than one occasion! It also can toggle between Spanish and English settings too!
12. Busy Board
When we bought our busy board, I truly couldn’t believe just how long my toddler would sit there zipping and unzipping the zipper and clipping and unclipping the buckles. And my now 4 year old is now loving buttoning and unbuttoning with this toy. It’s quiet, it’ll entertain them for a long time, AND they learn important life skills all at the same time!
13. Buckle Toy
This buckle toy doubles as an adorable stuffed animal for your kiddos to take along on their travels. As an added bonus, it also has a zipper pocket mouth where they can store a few more small travel toys too!
14. Water Wow Search & Find
My kids cannot get enough of the Melissa & Doug Water Wow books. So, when I saw the search & find version, I had to buy it! Once they “color in” the page, the red magnifine glass reveals hidden images throughout the pages!
15. Steering Wheel Toy
My kids absolutely love taking turns pretending to drive us around using their toy steering wheel. It’s an amazing travel toy for 2 year olds and one they will still love even as they get older!
16. Busy Cube
A busy cube is the perfect travel toy for both babies and toddlers. And since kids tend to grow out of most toys rather quickly, a travel toy that they can use for years is definitely a win.
17. Talking Flash Cards
These talking flash cards are perfect for travel because they don’t take up a lot of space in your bag and are educational too. And since age 2 is around the time language begins to take off, this travel toy could actually help them learn a few new words!
