DIY Lego Party Ideas

Lego Themed Birthday Cake

One of my favorite parts of birthdays is creating a themed cake for my kids’ birthdays and watching their face when they walk out in the morning. This Lego themed birthday cake was honestly super simple to make and didn’t take long either.

I used building block candy on one end of the cake and then frosted the rest and made it look like the Lego backhoe was covering the Legos in frosting. I then dug up a small corner of the cake with the back hoe and added minifigures we already had to hold the, “Happy Birthday,” candles I bought at Dollar Tree.

I finished everything off by adding more block candy around the bottom edge of the cake and adding a Lego number candle. (Walmart has them for only $1!)

Lego Waffles

We opted to have our Lego birthday party in the morning for the sake of my other kids’ naps. So, we decided to do a brunch theme.

The star of the show was our Lego waffle maker that makes Lego waffles you can actually build with and put together. This truly is what Lego lover dreams are made of. And to make things even better, Lego waffles make for an insanely cheap main course.

You can choose to make them ahead of time and keep them warm in a low temperature oven or you can put waffle batter into a nice dispenser and let your guests make them fresh. We made some ourselves and had some extra batter on hand in the fridge as well.

Use this hack to quickly cut your watermelon into rectangles. Then simply use toothpicks to skewer blueberries on top. Ta da. Fruit Legos.

DIY Lego Party Decor

While some party decorations take a lot of time to DIY,  the good news is that Lego birthday party decorations are insanely easy and cheap to DIY.

Lego wall

I created our Lego wall backdrop with four poster boards and some colored dessert plates from the Dollar Tree. It cost me about 10 dollars and then I used all the extra small plates for the cake at the party!

The Lego symbol in the middle came off a bag we got shopping at the Lego store but you can easily print one to add to your Lego wall as well.

Lego Box Bricks

After stockpiling our Amazon boxes for a while, I used plain colored wrapping paper and plain table cloths from Dollar Tree to wrap up the boxes. Then, I used a few more of the colored dessert plates to make them look like Legos.

I have a very small space for hosting so I just made a handful of small Legos to place around the house, but these are great to place all over your party and to add in front of the Lego wall to make a super cute backdrop for photos. You can make the Legos as big or as small as you want, especially if you go the tablecloth route to wrapping them.

Lego Door

With a cheap tablecloth, tape, full sized colored plates, and a printable Lego symbol you can turn the door to your party into a life sized Lego for about two dollars.

Lego Balloons & Streamers

As I was putting up balloons and streamers the night before my son’s birthday, I realized how easy it would be to make Legos up on the ceiling with them. So I strung streamers to create rectangles on the ceiling and put balloons inside to create Legos on the ceiling. It was super easy but looked awesome!

Minifigure Cups

This was my favorite decoration for our Lego party and it cost me a single dollar (technically $1.25 now that Dollar Tree is a joke but that’s beside the point).

With a yellow pack of cups from Dollar Tree and a sharpie, I created these minifigure cups for our Lego party. Everyone absolutely loved choosing the minifigure that fit their personality and since they were all different, everyone could easily keep track of their cup.

Lego Road & Lego Kits

With this set of baseplates and a handful of yellow Lego bricks, we created a road through the middle of the table at our Lego party. We used this road to display all of our son’s Lego creations. He was insanely excited to help decorate the night before and choose exactly how to display everything.

Lego Birthday Party Activities

Legos….Duh

lego party ideas

Lego birthday parties come with the perk of a built in party activity. All we did was place bowls of color sorted Legos all over the tables for our guests to build and play together while we celebrated our Lego obsessed kiddo. It was so fun to see what everyone built too!

Lego Corn Hole

Unfortunately it was too cold outside for us to do an outdoor Lego party. But this idea would be at the top of my list if I was creating an outdoor Lego party. You could also use yellow bean bags and draw minifigure faces on them for a little extra fun.

Lego Party Favor Ideas

Our party was just family so we chose to not do party favors at our party, but here are a few ideas that you can easily DIY.

Lego Rice Krispies or Brownies

Both rice krispies and brownies are quick, easy, and inexpensive to make at home. Just add M&Ms on top to create super delicious legos for your guests to snack on later.

Lego Juice Boxes

Kids love juice. Kids love Legos. Therefore, Lego juiceboxes are a win. All you need are juice boxes, tape, and some construction paper.

Marshmallow Minifgures

While these are a bit more work than the previous ideas, they do have the added bonus of acting as a decoration as well.

Lego Bag with Goodies

If you decide to go the Lego bag route, you can very easily create a “Lego bag” by getting plain colored gift bags and putting a few Lego themed goodies inside. Here are a few affordable options that are pretty awesome.

  • Lego Glasses– These Lego glasses each come with their own mini pack of bricks so each guest can decorate their glasses.
  • Lego Bubble Wands– Bubble wands are a classic party favor and the added Lego piece on top makes them extra fun for Lego lovers.
  • Lego Bracelets– These are simple, inexpensive, and fun to throw into a Lego goodie bag.
  • Lego Mystery Box of Racecars– Unlike a lot of the premade Lego party favor boxes, these are actually from Lego themselves!

This post was all about helping you find the perfect DIY Lego birthday party ideas to fit your budget and put a smile on your kid’s face. I hope these help you create a magical day of celebration.
